Just minutes from our Kent Island homes, Terrapin Nature Park is one of the island’s most peaceful places to stretch your legs. Spread across around 276 acres beside the Chesapeake Bay, the park brings together wildflower meadows, woodland, wetlands and a sandy shoreline with some of the best views of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge you’ll find.
Easy, mostly flat trails loop through the park, making it ideal for families and anyone who enjoys a gentle stroll. Keep an eye out for herons, ospreys and other birdlife, and in late summer the meadows glow with yellow wildflowers. The park also connects to the Cross Island Trail, a paved path across Kent Island, so it’s a great starting point for a bike ride.
Entry is free and the park is open from sunrise to sunset. Bring water, snacks and a camera for those bay views.
Best time to visit: Early morning or late afternoon, when the light over the bay is at its prettiest. Spring and autumn are especially lovely for walking and birdwatching.
