Just a short drive south of Ocean City, Assateague Island feels a world away from the boardwalk. This protected barrier island is famous for its wild horses, which roam freely across the beaches, dunes and salt marshes. Spotting them grazing by the water is a moment you won’t forget.
Start at the Assateague Island Visitor Center in the Maryland district to pick up maps and learn about the island’s wildlife, then cross the bridge to explore. You’ll find wide, uncrowded beaches for swimming and shell hunting, along with short nature trails through the marsh, forest and dunes. It’s also a wonderful spot for birdwatching, paddling on the calm bayside waters or simply enjoying the quiet.
Remember that the horses are wild, so keep a safe distance, never feed them and store your food securely. An entrance fee applies, so check the National Park Service website before you go.
Best time to visit: Spring and early autumn bring mild weather and fewer visitors. In summer, arrive early in the morning for cooler temperatures and the best chance of seeing horses on the beach, and pack insect repellent, water and sun protection.
